The formula
- Ask one question: "How likely are you to recommend this company as a place to work to a friend?", rated from 0 to 10.
- Ratings of 9 and 10 are promoters, 7 and 8 are passives, and 0 to 6 are detractors.
- eNPS is the percentage of promoters minus the percentage of detractors. It ranges from −100 (everyone is a detractor) to +100 (everyone is a promoter).
- Passives are neither added nor subtracted, but they count in the total: the more of them there are, the closer the score gets to zero.
Reading an eNPS carefully
- No threshold tells you what a good eNPS is for every company: the score depends on the exact wording of the question, when you ask it and who answers.
- The useful benchmark is your own history: the same score, measured the same way, from one quarter to the next. A change tells you more than a single number.
- In a small team every answer carries a lot of weight: check the headcount before reading anything into a gap.
